Dust falls from the top to the bottom. Start with the highest point and work your way down to the lowest. Now vacuum.- Use microfiber cloth. A microfiber cloth is electrostatic charged, meaning it literally attracts dust. It is also highly absorbent so it can last longer during your cleaning task. They take the dust with them not spread it around.
- Ceiling fans, light fixtures and baseboards. Use an extendable, bendable duster to do this. You can buy them with a removable head that’s machine washable.
- Cobwebs on ceilings. Use your extendable duster or place a sock on the end of a mop and tie with string or elastics.
- Walls. You can use a flat head mop with a microfiber cloth attached and dampened with a bit of water and TSP or all-purpose cleaner. Find a test spot to make sure your paint doesn’t come off. Not all paint is washable. Rub lightly and rinse frequently.
- Television and computer screens emit lots of static electricity. Remember that your appliances should not be sprayed with any type of product. Stick to a microfiber cloth.
- Silk flowers or artificial plants. Shake them out if they’re small enough or use a can of compressed air to shoot the dust off of them (outside if possible).
- Real plants. These can be put in the shower for an hour. Make sure the temperature stays cool, that the drain does not plug up with leaves, and the water pressure is low.
- Door mat. Eighty percent of the dirt in a typical house is from what we track in on our shoes. If you have the space, 6 feet (2 metres) of matting will stop almost all outdoor dirt from coming through your house. Start the mat outside on your porch if you can. Now you know why if you live in a condo or apartment your place stays cleaner than if you lived in a house. All that lobby and exterior hallway carpeting is already doing the job for you.
